Why Sharp Books Matter
Some sportsbooks welcome winning bettors and move their lines when they bet. Those books end up with the most accurate prices in the market.
Sharp vs recreational books
Sharp books (Pinnacle, Circa, BookMaker and a few others) take big bets from winning players, keep low margins and move quickly. Recreational books earn more from casual bettors, limit winners, and copy or lag behind sharp prices, especially on smaller sports and props.
Why their price is the benchmark
When a sharp book's line has absorbed bets from the best bettors, it is the closest thing to the true chance. Remove its vig and you get the fair line ChalkEdge compares everything else against.
Using them in practice
- If a pick'em app or recreational book offers a better price than the sharp fair line, that is a +EV spot.
- If sharp books move hard on a line and other books haven't followed yet, that is a Sharp Market Signal.
- On sports with thin markets, check more than one sharp source.
Prediction markets count too
Exchanges like Novig, Kalshi and Polymarket can be sharp when there is real money behind a price. ChalkEdge shows how much money is available at each price so you can tell a strong market from a thin one.
